What do Kendall Jenner, Snooki, Vanessa Hudgens, and Lindsay Lohan have in common? Over the past few years the study has provided a wealth of information about what we should and should not eat to live a long, healthy life In short, we know how certain foods affect our bodies, so we can adjust our diet accordingly to stay healthy and lose weight.

The divergences between findings from our study and the American study may arise from different measures used. In the American study, Stunkard silhouettes were used 28 ; in our setting, the participants self‐reported their ideal weight in kilograms. The studies also had quite different source populations: the American participants 17 were young adults (18‐30 years) from a multiethnic (47% African American) population. Our participants were ethnically homogenous Northern Europeans. It has been shown that body shape and beauty ideals and actual‐ideal weight discrepancy are highly culture‐specific 29 , 30 Thus, generalizations to other populations are not straightforward.
Among young women, the risk of major weight gain tended to be higher in dieters than in nondieters over 6 y in both initial-weight groups, although these differences were not significant. Older women who were dieting at baseline had a significantly higher risk of major weight gain over both follow-up periods (over 6 and 15 y, respectively—ORs: 2.43 and 1.53; 95% CI: 1.33, 4.42 and 1.06, 2.22). The ORs decreased only slightly when potential confounders were controlled for, although one previously significant result became nonsignificant. Exclusion of women with a change in parity during the follow-up periods or adjustment for baseline age only did not change the point estimates substantially.
