Starring Laura Linney as a woman who is frequently too busy taking care of everything else in life but who suddenly has to deal with a recent diagnosis of terminal cancer, the story behind "The Big C" seems like the kind of heavy material that might turn off many satellite tv viewers who aren't as interested in watching something so heavy. But the fact is that with an actress as capable as Linney at the helm and some seriously strong writing, "The Big C" has the chance to not harp on the sadder moments of the enviable course of action that the show must take, and rather focus on dealing with the same tropes that many Showtime shows tackle: the world of the living, with its surprisingly annoying, childlike spouses and stressful busywork. And with surprisingly choices in casting, including Gabourey Sidibe from "Precious," there are a lot of smart and brave choices being made across the board as far as the show is concerned.

The biggest mistake with songwriting that I see artists make, is not working on their material enough. To breakout as an artist, you need songs that really speak to people. They'll need to be better than what's out there. You can't compare yourself to 2nd or 3rd hits of artists that are already out in the marketplace. They have an audience already. You need to build your audience from your first song on. Co-writing is essential if you want to get somewhere in this business. It's a great way of networking and getting help with your career. The more people who know about you the better. Meet co-writers at music conferences like the ASCAP Expo, Taxi Road Rally, Durango Songwriters Expo, and the Hollywood Reporter Conference among others. You can also meet songwriters through publishers or at open mics and by going out to see music. If you find a writer you like, ask them if they are open to co-writes.
For some completely inexplicable reason, people started treating Facebook as a way to express every moment of their existence no matter how inconsequential. Just had a burger at Five Guys? Better check in! Heading to a club? Better write a status update! These events are so life changing that who wouldn't want to hear about them? I honestly don't understand it, and this is probably the number one reason I decided to finally delete my Facebook account: the sheer volume of useless crap. If you're one of the people I'll no longer be receiving your daily horoscope from, then I'm so very sorry. I hope you can find the strength to live without me.
